Delicate Trauma: The Oil Paintings of Kwon Kyung-yup | Colorcubic • Drew
When I was first introduced to Kwon Kyung-yup through a friend of mine, I somehow dismissed her art as another example of the ‘battle damage’ fetish that seems to be a reoccurring theme in popular anime and manga. …It was a few days later that I found myself thinking about her work again for some reason. There was something off about her paintings. I couldn’t quite place it at the time but a subsequent viewing showed me exactly what it was that had piqued my interest.

Technology has proved it can transform the world overnight — so why not be optimistic?
Once technology jumps over a hurdle thought impassable before, it makes that supposed miracle utterly commonplace and boring. 40 years ago, the idea of a mobile smart phone was utter magic. Now, nobody even bats an eye at it even as the ripples of this change affect us all in surprising ways. That’s what technology does — it makes miracles so easy, it’s boring. It’s even better than the magic of fairy tales in at least three ways: …

…Kate Cockrill directs the Social and Emotional Aspects of Abortion Program, and is trying to measure sources of stigma. She has found that many mothers deliberately explain their choice to abort in the context of their motherhood, thinking that doing so will ward off judgment. “Motherhood is an assertion of their humanity,” Cockrill told me of women who fear condemnation, “and claiming their motherhood is part of managing the stigma of abortion.”

The American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona and the Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence on Wednesday requested a preliminary injunction against a state law (HB 2384) that … is scheduled to take effect at the end of the year.
Under the law, Arizona residents cannot claim the state’s Working Poor Tax Credit for donations to organizations that “provide, pay for, promote, provide coverage of or provide referrals for abortions,” or financially support any entity that does. …also forbids the use of state or federal funds and student tuition to train medical professionals to provide abortion services (Women’s Health Policy Report, 8/19).

Next Act In DC’s Kabuki Theater: House GOP Lays Trap For Obama On Jobs Plan | TPMDC
The House GOP has hit upon a way to undercut President Obama’s attacks on them and advance conservative policy goals all at once. This week, they’ll pass legislation that includes perhaps the least stimulative measure in President Obama’s jobs bill and pay for it with perhaps the most regressive measure in a recent package of deficit reducing proposals he submitted to the joint deficit super committee.

Daily Kos: Occupy Winter! Cold climate occupiers need help / Creating online resource
People in Denver are already dealing with hypothermia and snow (SNOW. ALREADY.); we’re expecting freezing temps tonight out here, and I’ve heard horrible rumors that winter this year may be a bad one, because last year wasn’t bad enough, I guess.
So, onward!
In Boston, we’re lucky because we’ve been able to set up tents; other groups may have to come up with even more creative solutions to resist literally freezing to death. My goal here is to get as many people dealing with the cold sharing solutions as possible.
While we’re definitely considering creative structural solutions (domes? tiny insulated “houses” on wheels?), there are things that will help immediately (and I’m willing to bet other groups dealing with the cold have the same needs):…

Over the last 6 months, the Scott Walker administration and the Republicans who control the Wisconsin legislature have attempted to gradually shut Wisconsin citizens out of the state capitol building. …
Peaceful activists have continuously challenged the illegal restrictions, culminating in their arrests for things like quietly sitting in the Assembly gallery and filming the proceedings on hand-held devices or holding small sheets of paper with excerpts of the Wisconsin constitution printed on them. …
Twelve more arrests were made last night. …
The Wisconsin constitution requires that the doors of the capitol be open to the public whenever the legislature is conducting business. The building usually closes at 6 p.m., but last night’s Assembly session lasted until after 10:00. When Rep. Pocan went out to grab a bite to eat and returned shortly after 6, he found that most of the doors had been locked… Apparently he was even delayed by security staff when he finally found an open door.

Daily Kos: The Bill that Could End All of the Occupy Protests
Today everyone is paying close attention to the attempts to have videos documenting police brutality removed from You-Tube. There is a much greater threat looming. HR3261 Allows the U.S. Government to serve any internet provider with a court order to remove what they deem is copyrighted material or be shut down within five days. Under the guise of stopping piracy, any site can be shut down indefinitely.

Daily Kos: My friend, NYPD Captain John D’Adamo, protecting our First Amendment rights
Captain John D’Adamo carefully and with great respect, guided the healthcare protesters as we marched from Zuccotti Park up Broadway, through Washington Square Park, up Fifth Avenue, across 14th Street to the now shuttered St. Vincent’s hospital.
Not one arrest, not one sharp word, not one bad moment–thanks to Captain D’Adamo’s skillful leadership, and a committed group of peaceful protesters. …
He told us at the outset, “I’m here to help you guys get to where you need to go. Just work with me, and I’ll get you there”. And he kept repeating this for four miles and four hours.

Daily Kos: OWS Occupies the Department of Education
This Occupation took place in New York City on Tuesday, October 25. Approximately 200 concerned citizens occupied the Panel for Education Policy meeting and, using the human microphone, expressed their concerns to Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott and the committee members, 13 non-elected officials that make decision about education matters for all of New York City.
The Chancellor and his fellow committee members left the meeting in frustration but not before being issued an invitation to attend the General Assembly to discuss education in New York City. The Chancellor refused to accept the invitation.

The Great Libya-Shariah Freakout of 2011 | Mother Jones

Quan, Under Attack, Changes Course on Occupy Oakland – The Bay Citizen
Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, under attack from inside and outside her administration, announced late Wednesday that Occupy Oakland can return to the plaza in front of City Hall, an abrupt reversal that followed a night of street violence Tuesday and widespread criticism over her handling of the crisis.
As more than 1,000 people descended on Frank H. Ogawa Plaza [aka Oscar Grant Plaza] Wednesday night, Quan called for “a minimum police presence” …
…Occupy Oakland also appeared to be dictating events. The city initially re-opened only a concrete portion of the plaza in front of City Hall, encircling the lawn where protesters had camped with a 6-foot chainlink fence. But protesters calmly removed the fence in the early evening, and some protesters began to lay down sleeping bags and drive tent stakes into the grass.

College Tuition Increases; State Funding Is Slashed
Nationally, the cost of a full credit load has passed $8,000, an all-time high. If you include room and board, the average list price for a state school now runs more than $17,000 a year, according to the twin annual reports on college costs and student aid published Wednesday by the College Board.
Helping drive the national numbers were huge tuition increases at public universities in California, which enrolls 10 percent of public four-year college students and whose 21 percent tuition increase this year was the largest of any state.
Despite the rise in tuition, room and board, federal assistance has been decreasing.

Obama Student Loan Plan: For We, the People?
Last month the White House launched “We the People,” an official online petitioning feature. Based at WhiteHouse.gov, the tool lets Americans directly petition the government (a right guaranteed in the Constitution) with the promise that, if an idea gains enough support, the Obama administration will issue an official response. As a result of one particularly popular petition on “We the People,” which drew more than 30,000 signatures, on Wednesday President Obama announced plans to ease student-loan debt. …
