Race-Based Execution: Rick Perry on the Spot
Texas Gov. Rick Perry is being asked to stop the execution of an African-American man who is scheduled to die in a Huntsville, Texas, death chamber on Thursday. His death sentence was handed down in a sentencing hearing during which jurors were told that his race made him more likely to pose a future danger to the public.

Cherokee Nation to U.S. Government: Kick Rocks on Black Vote
Steve Olafson of Reuters is reporting that the Cherokee Nation is refusing to cooperate with the U.S. government, which warned that the results of the Sept. 24 Cherokee election for principal chief will not be recognized by the U.S. government if the ousted members, known to some as “Cherokee Freedmen,” are not allowed to vote.

After the Civil War, in which the Cherokees fought for the South, a treaty was signed in 1866 guaranteeing tribal citizenship for the freed slaves. The U.S. government said that the 1866 treaty between the Cherokee tribe and the U.S. government guaranteed that the slaves were tribal citizens, whether or not they had a Cherokee blood relation.

Troy Davis Execution Date: NAACP Speaks Out
Davis was convicted of murdering a police officer in 1991. Since then the case against him has fallen apart: Seven of the nine original witnesses against Troy have recanted or contradicted their testimony, and three of those witnesses now claim that their testimony was coerced. The physical evidence against him was discredited and withdrawn.
