Buyers and sellers | Pandagon – Amanda Marcotte
…the continuing model of heterosexuality is based on the he’s buying/she’s selling model.
…I think that it underpins a lot of rape culture and creepy demands from so-called Nice Guys®, because [it] has the side consequence of convincing the public that men are entitled to partner sex. …
Dating advice tends to get gendered along these lines. When women aren’t getting any action, it’s pretty much standard to tell them to look at themselves and see if they’re charging too high a price for the product they have on offer.
…Sex is a social situation, and should be treated as one. But instead, it’s treated like a market and so we all have to wonder if it’s acceptable to pressure an unwilling person as long as that person isn’t fighting back. …
I actually would say that my ideal is a world where everyone is kind of selling a little, but no one is cast as a buyer.

Simply Telling Others to Come Up With All the Details Isn’t Actually a “Plan” | Firedoglake • by Jon Walker
Besides a few terrible specific points – like cutting Social Security – almost all of the Gang of Six’s so-called “deficit reductions” come from simply saying the relevant Senate committees should come come up with an idea of how to achieve set amounts of deficit reductions in the future.

Franken Destoys Focus On The Family Witness, Exposes Misuse Of HHS Study | Think Progress • by Igor Volsky
During this morning’s Senate DOMA hearings, Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) destroyed Focus on the Family’s Tom Minnery’s argument that children are better off with opposite-sex parents by demonstrating how Minnery misrepresented an HHS study. The study — which Minnery cited to oppose marriage equality — actually found that children do best in two-parent households, regardless of the parents’ gender. Watch it: [video]

Deepak Chopra: Why We Need President Obama — A Critical Moment
…this is the moment when loyalty is going to count the most. That’s a hard sentence to write. Liberal politics is based on a non-regimented, all-inclusive approach to democracy. …But certain harsh realities must be faced. …
It was such a relief…when President Obama won in 2008 that we underestimated the debasing effect that two generations of right-wing indoctrination has had. …
[The] victory [of the Civil War] was unfulfilled, followed by a reactionary period that destined America to a hundred more years of virulent racism.
…all of us who have taken advantage of our liberal heritage to question and criticize President Obama need to step back and consider the radical nature of the opposition, from the Supreme Court down to the local precinct. …
If ever there was a time to stand behind the captain, this is it. …like Churchill calling upon a coalition cabinet in the depth of the war years, it’s paramount that we see the greater danger for what it is.

Vision: Progressives Consider Using Tea Party Tactics to Rebuild the American Dream | Activism
Is the Rebuild the Dream initiative the much awaited culmination of all the anti-Tea Party efforts? Is it another forum for lefties to air our grievances and go home to a defeated reality? Can we figure out when to rally around or against a person or one defined cause?
…learning how and when to implement our much cherished freedom of expression and when to buckle down, listen, and act on a more or less agreed upon action. “Rebuild the Dream” might very well be that long awaited opportunity for progressives to prove that the tactics that made the Tea Party successful can be adopted and capitalized by the left , in order to act on the change we’ve been talking about for years.

Judges: Death Penalty Used for Re-Election?
Alabama judges seem to impose the ultimate judgment more often in an election year.
…there are 40 men on death row in Alabama who were placed there after a judge overrode a jury’s sentence of life in prison. Given that Alabama imposes few obstacles to the imposition of the death penalty by juries (a death sentence does not require a unanimous verdict in Alabama — the agreement of 10 of 12 jurors is sufficient), and that jurors opposed to capital punishment are excluded from serving on Alabama juries, judicial overrides to impose death are particularly alarming. But these judicial overrides have not provoked charges of “activist judging,” confirming that the charge of judicial activism has simply become right-wing shorthand to describe a judge whose independence gets in the way of the conservative agenda.
…the judicial override in Alabama is almost always imposed when a jury has given a defendant life in prison for the murder of a white victim.
