…it’s a familiar situation for anyone who has noticed the curious racial dynamics of downtown nightclubs in this city where there are black clubs, Latino clubs and white clubs that never seem to coexist.
Herman Cain Apologizes to Muslim Leaders
On Wednesday, Cain met with four Muslim leaders in Sterling, Va. He said in a statement later that he was “truly sorry” for comments that may have “betrayed” his commitment to the Constitution and the religious freedom it guarantees. He also acknowledged that Muslims, “like all Americans,” have the right to freely practice their faith and that most Muslim Americans are peaceful and patriotic.

Black in Latin America: Henry Louis Gates Jr. Talks to NPR
The Root Editor-in-Chief Henry Louis Gates Jr. recently discussed his latest book and four-part documentary, Black in Latin America, on NPR’s Fresh Air With Terry Gross. In Black in Latin America, Gates highlights the impact of the slave trade on countries south of the border, such as Mexico, Brazil and Cuba, and its lasting effects on Latin America’s cultural history.
Central Park Dig: Black Town Unearthed
There was a huge development this summer for the anthropologists and historians who have been piecing together the history of an African-American community that was snuffed out in the 1850s by the creation of Central Park. The New York Times reports that they finally won permission from the city to excavate an area near 85th Street where evidence of the former residents’ lives is buried.
About two-thirds of the residents of Seneca Village were African American, while the rest were mostly Irish. The community was settled in the 1820s, a few years before slavery was abolished in New York. Despite old news reports that the village was a squatter camp, it was actually made up of working- and middle-class property owners.

Amid all of the controversy, on Wednesday, Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Jeff Radebe announced that Ngcobo had withdrawn his decision to accept the extension of his term of office, and Zuma had accepted it. He did not think it was proper to accept the extension while the case was in litigation. You think?
