World Refugee Day: Poor Countries Bearing the Burden – The Root
A new United Nations report released yesterday on World Refugee Day has found that a huge proportion of the world’s refugee population is currently found in poorer countries, despite misconceptions that industrialized countries are home to the most displaced people.

The report said that poor countries host 80 percent of the world’s refugees. With 1.9 million people, Pakistan has the largest refugee population, followed by Iran and Syria …

…the report also revealed that the number of people forced to flee their homes to escape war or abuse has risen to its highest level in 15 years.

…to support a disaster-preparedness program through an online auction. The Bahamas Hurricane Prep website they’re raising money for will assist the island community with preparedness for the hurricane season.

The site will provide vital information about hurricanes and how they affect those on the islands, and make available information about preparing emergency kits, lists of emergency shelters and links to relevant authorities and outlets where they can find up-to-date information.

The effort is timely. The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center has forecast 12 to 18 named storms in the Atlantic during the 2011 hurricane season. Three to six of those are expected to become major hurricanes.
