#thingsfatpeoplearetold | Alas, a blog • by Maia
Telling the truth about oppression is a radical act. And one of the most important truths about oppression is that it happens and it matters.

I’m sure different people have got different things out of reading that hashtag. Some statements made me uncomfortable with their resonance, because there are many things people have said around me that I’d rather forget for the sake of my relationships with those people.

But my overwhelming feeling one was one of deep recognition. … To see this endless row of statements scrolling down that contain everything that anyone’s projected on to my body since I was ten… it’s made clear to me not just the various elaborate things I have done to avoid hearing #thingsfatpeoplearetold – but my ways of avoiding hearing these things are valid and important survival strategies, not things wrong with me. It’s incredibly legitimising to read all this and think “actually yeah that’s really hard to deal with.”

Is Taxation Theft? | Alas, a blog • by Myca
[America is] a club dedicated to wealth creation. Members of this club get access to an infrastructure and institutional support that allows for better wealth creation than most similar ‘clubs’ around the world, but as part of that, the club charges a fee.

…if it turns out that you don’t like your membership, you’re free to leave the club at any time! …

…this is where we discuss childhood, a period in which you learn the rules of the club, bear few of the costs, and receive only a limited set of the club benefits.

During this period, your, “trial membership,” to the club, you learn when a full membership will accrue, what the benefits are, and what the costs are. …

If, granting all of that, the club works out really well for you, you make a lot of money, and the club bills you for your membership … well, it’s hard to muster much sympathy. If you keep living here and reaping the benefits, you’ll be expected to contribute to the upkeep.
