Advertisers and Publishers Adopt and Implement Do Not Track
Mozilla introduced the Do Not Track (DNT) HTTP header approach in January and launched the feature in Firefox 4. We’ve worked closely with more than fifty leading companies and trade groups to help devise ways to implement DNT and offer users more control over how their browsing behavior is tracked and used online. …Microsoft subsequently [included DNT] in Internet Explorer 9.

…it’s essential that publishers and advertisers adopt and implement Web technologies that respect consumers’ wishes to not be tracked across their Web properties and services.

Today there are two significant developments on this front:…

The Associated Press (AP) is the first company to deploy DNT on a large scale, and it only took a few hours for one engineer to implement. …

With the integration of the DNT into Firefox, users can now check a “Do Not Track” box in the “Advanced” screen of Firefox “Options” (PC) or “Preferences” (Mac).

Comprehensive slang immersion | Maud Newton
Thanks to Jonathon Green’s magnificent three-volume Dictionary of Slang, which arrived yesterday compliments of Oxford University Press, I’ve already learned that the first recorded use of “bad shag” dates to 1788, that to “beat skin”* (1944) doesn’t mean what you think, you pervert, and that the term “dude” was once (1883) considered so offensive that …

…As for “douchebag”: raise your hand if you’d like to see a usage shout-out to Alex Balk, circa TMFTML; has any single man in history worked as tirelessly, and as effectively, to restore an epithet to the lexicon, with so little recognition?

…[Any dictionary of slang] runs into the problem that slang has a particular affinity with the spoken rather than the written language. …

The rise of the novel led to an ever-increasing representation of forms of speech both low and high…

If you and I had plans to get together anytime, ever, I’m sorry. You know what I’ll be doing with the rest of my life.

Scott Adams: I meant to do that! | Feministe – David Futrelle
Cats do [this]. Birds do it. Even drunk squirrels do it. [youtube links]

…Recently…the Dilbert mastermind caused a bit of a contretemps…by posting a blog entry so astoundingly idiotic, and so patronizingly misogynistic, that it managed to offend Men’s Rights Activists and feminists alike.

…when I posted a version of that piece here on Feministe…Adams showed up to defend himself…by insisting that his critics were too dumb and/or emotional to understand his oh-so-subtle argument. …“Mr. Adams,” wrote Sheelzebub, speaking for many, “thank you so much for coming back here and entertaining us with your special brand of epic fail.”

…he simply repeats his assertion that those who have criticized his post are too emotional or invested in the issues to truly “get it.” The culmination of this line of, er, “reasoning” is this bit of passive-aggressive fuckery at the end of his post:…

[Adams: troll, fool, or wanker? -L]

Senate Hawks Berate Gates Over Handoff Of Libya To NATO | TPMDC
Defense Secretary Robert Gates endured nearly six hours of grilling from Congress Thursday, with the most combative questioning coming from — surprisingly — Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and a group of Senate hawks on the Armed Services Committee who support military intervention in Libya.

McCain expressed grave disappointment about the decision to have the U.S. military forces step aside and allow NATO to take control before Muammar Qaddafi has been toppled from power.

Sean Duffy To CNN: TPM Selectively Edited My Video! | TPMDC
…the town hall appearance where Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI) discussed "struggling" to live on his $174,000/ year salary.

…after using their legal muscle to force us to take down the full video and replace it with an excerpt, Duffy's office is now claiming that the use of the excerpt is a ploy to mislead the public about what he said. And CNN is reporting their bogus claim as fact.
