CSS Floats 101
[A List Apart]

The float property is a valuable and powerful asset to any web designer/developer working with HTML and CSS. Tragically, it can also cause frustration and confusion if you don’t fully understand how it works. Test or refresh your knowledge as Noah Stokes explores float theory and behavior, and guides us through common float-related coding pitfalls.

9 March 1831 – French Foreign Legion is Created
Following the July Revolution in 1830, foreigners were no longer permitted to join the French Army. In 1831, in order to soak up troublemakers and foreign mercenaries who could otherwise cause disruption to the fragile French establishment King Louis Philippe formed the Légion Étrangère.

The new French Foreign Legion was based in Algeria, at Sidi Bel-Abbès, and the country remained its base for 130 years.

Ancient Arab Shipwreck Yields Secrets of Ninth-Century Trade – NYTimes.com
[via ABlogAboutHistory.com]

“This exhibition tells us a story about an extraordinary moment in globalization,” said Julian Raby, director of the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. “It brings to life the tale of Sinbad sailing to China to make his fortune. It shows us that the world in the ninth century was not as fragmented as we assumed. There were two great export powers: the Tang in the east and the Abbasid based in Baghdad.”

Until the Belitung find, historians had thought that Tang China traded primarily through the land routes of Central Asia, mainly on the Silk Road. Ancient records told of Persian fleets sailing the Southeast Asian seas but no wrecks had been found, until the Belitung dhow.

Why the Food Movement Is Becoming an Environmental Force – TIME
Foodies Can Eclipse (and Save) the Green Movement
By Bryan Walsh

What makes the food movement so unusual is that it's not a single national movement at all, it's a series of organized smaller mobilizations — which is both an asset and a liability. A sustainable-food conference I attended in Manhattan over the weekend, put on under the TED imprimatur, shows the striking diversity of the movement(s)…

Ebooks: durability is a feature, not a bug | Technology | guardian.co.uk
[Cory Doctorow]

Whether a HarperCollins book has the circulatory vigour to cope with 26 checkouts or 200, it's bizarre to argue that this finite durability is a feature that we should carefully import into new media. It would be like assuming the contractual obligation to attack the microfilm with nail-scissors every time someone looked up an old article, to simulate the damage that might have been done by our careless patrons to the newsprint that had once borne it.

Maddow: ‘#Wisconsin, you won.’
[The Maddow Blog]

Now, with Michigan, that's another deal. The Senate is rolling ahead with legislation that would allow the state to declare towns or school districts in a state of emergency, appoint an emergency financial manager, and give that manager very, very free rein.

The Racism of Frame
[Ta-Nehisi Coates : The Atlantic]

…"The lazy assumption that Obama's father, a Luo by birth, would have been a part of the Mau Mau Rebellion simply underscores the fact that Europeans and Americans have NEVER understood the Mau Mau Rebellion."

"…the world had just gone through the Second World War, which saw the gassing of six million Jews, the slaughtering of some 50 million civilians, etc. Yet it took the Mau Mau rebellion for people to think that 'civilization' was endangered. Think about that, and then ask yourself, why were people so freaked out by Mau Mau?"

…I was wrong to absolve Huckabee. I'd like to say it won't happen again. But I'd be lying.
