- Have to have all your news the minute it breaks? The new Delayed Gratification Quarterly is working to change your mind. Started by Rob Orchard and Marcus Webb's Slow Journalism Company, the magazine hopes to remind us what fast news can’t do…
“We revel in being the last,” to break news, says Webb.

- Sarah Palin’s Father: ‘We Sleep With Guns’ | AlterNet
- Speaking on their daughter's rise to political superstardom within the conservative community, Palin's parents addressed how some of the less favorable aspects of her fame have come to impact their lives. They said that the entire family has faced death threats.
[This shouldn't need to be said, but-- no matter what your politics, death threats are not cool. -L]
- Wisconsin Is a Swing State in More Ways Than One – NYTimes.com
- [FiveThirtyEight - Nate Silver]
It is very difficult to predict how the standoff will be resolved. But there are powerful incentives for both Democrats and Republicans in the Wisconsin Senate to reach a compromise of some kind, one that would almost certainly involve cutting benefits and pay for state employees but not significantly altering the scope of collective bargaining.
Mr. Walker has so far resisted any suggestion of a compromise. But he may find himself the odd man out.
- Texas Legislators Fight Back With Pointed Amendments
- [RHRealityCheck.org - Amanda Marcotte]
[Oh, do read and find out about the amendments which the pro-choice legislators offered. Dutton, Castro, and Marquez for the win. -L]
…In an ideal world, a law whose purpose is merely to harass women who get abortions wouldn’t pass at all, but without the benefit of being able to block it, pro-choicers have to take the next step, and that’s expose laws like these for what they are. Ultrasound laws are invariably defended as somehow being good for the victims of them, and anti-choicers invariably pose as people concerned about children and women. These amendments demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that the anti-choicers offering this bill don’t care about women, children, or even fetuses really. Once stripped of their excuses, all that’s left is the unvarnished truth: anti-choice legislators are wasting the taxpayer’s money and everyone’s time…
- Wikipedia and non-mainstream views
- …Based on past experience as a former, obsessive Wikipedia editor several years ago, I felt that Wikipedia’s notability guidelines amplified mainstream views while suppressing non-mainstream views. This works for dealing with quackery, but it also frames white, male worldviews as objective and universal.
However, it’s not all hopeless.
David Sindel has edited the Wikipedia article on Rape culture (trigger warning) by including prominent examples of rape culture:… [His] edits remain.
…I also checked out the unfortunate Nice Guy Wikipedia article just now, and it now includes a criticism of “nice guy” …

- Arizona Bill Would Void Foreclosures Without Full Title History
- Arizona’s Republican-led state Senate surprised many when it passed 28-2, SB 1259, a bill requiring banks to prove ownership and provide a list of all former owners in chronological order. The bill, which is expected to pass the House, would void foreclosures if lenders were unable to produce the full chain of title. Similar bills have been introduced in New York, Oregon and Virginia.
