State of Emergency Declared in Bahrain | Firedoglake – David Dayen
In addition to an extension of the struggle for human rights…this is a proxy battle, part of a regional jockeying for power between the Saudis and the Iranians. …

The US has urged “restraint” in Bahrain while sending emissaries like Mike Mullen and Robert Gates to show support for the ruling regime.

…the sectarian component of this uprising brings up another point. This was essentially predicted by events in Iraq in 2003. That upset the regional balance of power and ended up tipping the nation to the Shiites, expanding Iranian dominance over the region. The Saudis were alarmed at this, and needed to assert their own power as well. That has now played itself out in Bahrain… Back when the Bush Administration invaded Iraq, many talked about destabilizing the region. I think this is what they meant.

MUST-READ: Tough nerds and tyrants
[Hullabaloo - digby smells a rat.]

I hate to be a broken record, but you will not find a better example of disaster capitalism than this. There is no reason for such drastic actions. It's not as if we're in a state of emergency like they are in Japan. And yet these people are rushing through draconian changes to basic democratic systems without much debate or discussion.

Now that the FDA has assigned an exclusive right to create the easily-made formula to one company, KV Pharmaceuticals, the price has risen to $1500. Almost all of it is pure profit, and KV Pharma did not develop the drug or pay for its trials: the taxpayer did, via the National Institute for Health.

More advantages that blatant liars have
[Pandagon - Amanda Marcotte]

During the ACORN days, O’Keefe actually tried to conceal the original videos, knowing that they proved he was a liar. Now he’s realized that being a known liar doesn’t actually make any difference. He doesn’t even perform a charade of being ashamed for being such a terrible liar. At this point, he releases a video, everyone knows up front that he’s a liar, and everyone will just pretend that he’s not for the 12-24 hours it takes for the video to ruin someone’s life.
