Philosophy of Chemistry (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
…has two major parts. In the first, conceptual issues arising within chemistry are carefully articulated and analyzed. Such questions which are internal to chemistry include the nature of substance, atomism, the chemical bond, and synthesis. In the second, traditional topics in philosophy of science such as realism, reduction, explanation, confirmation, and modeling are taken up within the context of chemistry.

Laws are usually believed to stand in a tight conceptual relation to many important key concepts such as causation, …etc. Traditionally, philosophers of science have focused on physical laws, which were taken to be at least true, universal statements … But…laws in the special sciences (such as biology, psychology, economics etc.) appear to have…different features than the laws of physics. …

How and whether the laws of physics and the laws of the special sciences differ is one of the crucial questions motivating the debate on ceteris paribus laws.

William Walker, Filibuster
[About.com Latin American History]

William Walker (1824-1860) was the ultimate Yankee imperialist. He raised private armies to invade Mexico, Nicaragua and Honduras, and succeeded for a while in setting himself up as President of Nicaragua. His long term goal was to bring these territories into the United States of America. Sound preposterous? It was, even then, but you'd be surprised how close he came to pulling it off!

Majority of Americans Support Keeping Abortion Legal
[RHRealityCheck.org - Robin Marty]

In passing numerous anti-choice bills both in the state and national legislatures, Republicans will be popular for throwing red meat to their base, but the majority of the public will not be as pleased with the approach. Independents, who overwhelmingly support abortion access 58 percent to 38 percent.

Stimulating Happiness – NYTimes.com
One overwhelming result of happiness research is that having a job matters a lot, much more than you might have expected just from the income involved. Well, duh, you may say — and it’s true that anyone who has ever spent time unemployed, or knows anyone who has been unemployed, knows that the blow to self-esteem is far greater than the mere financial loss. …

So what does this say about policy? It says that job creation is urgent, even if it isn’t very productive in terms of GDP. A WPA-type program when you’re in a severe slump is more productive than most people imagine, but even if it isn’t very productive, it can do a lot to help the nation’s overall welfare, simply by putting people to work. …

The irony, of course, is that Cameron is pushing happiness economics even as he pursues an austerity program that will lead to a great deal of misery, above and beyond the lost GDP.
