Why Al Jazeera Isn’t Available in the United States
[Crooks and Liars - karoli]

I've been frustrated by the fact that I can't get Al Jazeera on cable broadcast, only Roku and via my iPhone. While I know there's a movement afoot to petition cable networks to add it, I have my doubts it will happen. Why? Well, simply put, because the Department of Defense under the Bush administration was offended by their more objective reporting during the invasion of Iraq.

Someone pointed me to this 2003 New York Times article with details…

Al Jazeera's reporting on the Egypt uprising has been unparalleled. Coverage on the usual channels has been ridiculously biased, US-centric, and banal. For an example of the differences, if you have the CNN iPhone or iPad app, check the "live" link on it. It goes straight to Egypt State Television. On the other hand, Al Jazeera has consistently provided on-the-street information, even after being cut off by the Egyptian government.

George Bush says Tea Party suffers from "Nativism"
[Crooks and Liars - John Amato]

George [W.] Bush has infuriated the Tea Party faction of the GOP when he spoke out January 24 at Southern Methodist University in Dallas against what he perceives is a historic shift back to the olden days of isolationism, protectionism and its demon-seed hellspawn, Nativism.

Laura Ingraham filled in for O'Reilly and was furious at the president she once held so dear to her heart…

To back up her position she uses a Dallas Tea Party poll which showed over 95% in favor of Arizona's hateful SB1070 law. I guess that's irrefutable proof that Conservative opposition towards immigration reform is anything but Nativism, right?

Anti-Fascism ! | Flickr – Photo Sharing!
This is a photo of a well known graffiti. I found it on a wall near the university of Coimbra, Portugal. I took the picture in 2008. The design says it all in such a simple way! Anti-Fascism, Anti-Nazism, Anti-Racism… We must never forget the past.

So, they really do want to kick puppies…
[Balloon Juice - Dennis G.]

Last November the voters in Missouri approved the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act by over 60,000 votes. So, naturally the wingnuts in charge of the Missouri House and Senate have put overturning the law as a top priority for their 2011 Legislative agenda. Three bills to help protect puppy kickers from oversight and anti-cruelty measures have already been introduced in the Missouri House. The Missouri Senate and House have already held hearings and the “Beat a Puppy Act” is on its way to becoming law. As for the voters, the message from their TeaBagger representatives is clear: piss off and shut up.

Maybe we should just call them refugee camps and then maybe [U.S.] cities could apply for UN aid.

Why Egypt 2011 is not Iran 1979
[Informed Comment - Juan]

Alarms have been raised by those observing the popular uprising in Egypt that, while it is not itself a Muslim fundamentalist movement, the Muslim fundamentalists could take it over as it unfolds. The best-positioned group to do so is the Muslim Brotherhood. Some are even conflating the peaceful Brotherhood with radical groups such as al-Qaeda. I showed in my recent book, Engaging the Muslim World, that the Muslim Brotherhood has since the 1970s opposed the radical movements.

F*cking tides, how do they work?
[Pandagon - Amanda Marcotte]

The good news is that this expanded war on science from conservatives is going to eventually come into conflict with their support of endless spending on weapons research, some of which requires knowledge of the basics of astronomy and physics that explain how the moon got there and the tides works.
