Randal Koene on Activity Logging
[The Quantified Self]

…Randal Koene shows his Linux project "dil2al" (detailed item lists to activity lists). Every 20 minutes, Randal gets a prompt asking him to log his activities and recommending possible task changes according to his set priorities. He's been using this system since 1999, as a memory assist and a fun way to be productive.

[Wow. Could this be a really effective way to develop desired habits? I'm thinking a reminder every 20mins is too often, but still, I can imagine myself saying, "I don't want to get off-task/topic because it will mess up my dil2al system."

You would, of course, want it to be tightly integrated with your calendar and task manager.

It’s Kind of Sad How Wistful This Makes Me
[Alas, a blog - Richard Jeffrey Newman]

…a brief review of Grammar-Land: Grammar in Fun for the Children of Schoolroom-shire, which was originally published in the 1880s by M. L. Nesbitt and which The British Library has recently issued in a facsimile edition. It sounds, from the passages Reynolds quotes, like a really fun book. Here, for example, is Nesbitt on the parts of speech:…

What I think my students enjoy is the sense of control that diagramming sentences gives them; it turns grammar into a puzzle, a problem, something like geometry, and so it becomes a skill that they can master, and I think that the narrative approach taken by Nesbitt in Grammarland probably would … have the same effect. After all, if you can understand something through a story, then you have some degree of control over what you have understood because you know where things fit into the narrative.
