On Tuesday, General Petraeus Achieved Victory in Oceania; On Wednesday, He Led Us to War against Eastasia
[Firedoglake - by emptywheel]

Forgive me if I dismiss what are real measures against a genuinely dangerous organization. But I can’t help but suspect this lays the ground work to ensure we have a war against terror to fight (and with it, expanded executive powers) beyond July 2011.

The Southern Strategy lives on
[Pandagon - Amanda Marcotte]

…In order to establish their claim that the country belongs to angry white conservatives and not to everyone, they need to make appeals to history…

[Also, ancestor-worship fits well into the authoritarian worldview.

Authoritarianism comes from clinging to a leader for protection, as children do with their parents. Parent-worship gets a little complicated, though, since living people tend to present you with first-hand evidence that they aren't all-powerful. Much better to revere the dead; even if they treated women and people of color like cattle, it doesn't matter, since not caring about things that you can't see/sense is a common cognitive error.

The reason to rewrite history is that the Southern Strategy is still in play.

Conservapedia: The theory of relativity is a liberal plot « Climate Progress
[Climate Progress - h/t to Pandagon]

I would have filed this under Signs of the Apocalypse, but we are way past that. This is more like, Signs that the Apocalypse happened a long time ago but we were all too busy watching American Idol to notice.

…how can you possibly quote astrophysics to refute relativity? Why even bother?
