How to Tell When Your Boss Is Lying
[Lifehacker - Adam Pash]

Two researchers at Stanford's Graduate School of Business pored through 30,000 conference calls made by CEOs and CFOs over a period of four years, studying each for word choice and delivery. The result: They figured out common tells for lying bosses.

Obama Appointed Deficit Commission Co-Chair Alan Simpson: Social Security Is Like “A Milk Cow With 310 Million Tits”
Nobody really thought Alan Simpson could top his video appearance with Alex Lawson where he talked about “the lesser people” on Social Security. But once again, President Obama’s hand-picked Co-Chair of the Catfood Commission tasked with “tweaking” Social Security has proven us all wrong.

Simpson has written a letter to Ashley Carson of the Older Women’s League (OWL) responding to a piece she wrote on the Huffington Post that is so offensive, sexist and ageist that…well, take it away, Alan Simpson:

[Simpson's letter redacted]

What I want to know is — where’s our letter, Al? We’ve written a bazillion worse things about you…

My feelings are hurt. Don’t we get letters too?

Or is your verbal largesse something you reserve for the Older Women’s League, and those you think can’t hit back?

Well, they are hitting back. They’re calling for your resignation from the Catfood Commission.

Narratives about subversion and contamination in the Park51 controversy
[Pandagon - Amanda Marcotte]

There are a lot of interesting points made in this video from Rachel Maddow’s show on Monday, mainly about how blatant racism has been the go-to tactic since Obama was elected [...] It's gotten so bad that even the usual suspects in the Village are having trouble denying that conservatives are being straight-up racist…

But one thing that really was new information for me in this video was Suhail Khan’s* description of what Pam Gellar and Frank Gaffney have been up to in general, which is finding Muslims who work as bureaucrats and “outing” them, i.e. targeting them for attack from the flying monkeys. I found the entire narrative behind this kind of action alarming, because the insinuation is that these people weren’t “out” as Muslim before. Which is a way for Gellar to reinforce the narrative that Islam is a subversive force that hides itself, basically the same narrative that flying monkey wingnuts used about communism in the red-baiting days. [...] The parallels between the beliefs about Eisenhower/communism and Obama/Islam should be immediately apparent.

…It’s about making Muslims officially second class citizens. Even if it’s just one place you’re not supposed to go in the public square, that’s already a form of segregation. [...] How many of the opponents of the mosque would support a program where Muslims have to be “outed” and made to wear badges so that their access to certain areas can be monitored carefully? It sounds crazy, but it’s the logical next step once you buy the logic of the people who are pushing this controversy, which is that Muslims are secretive and subversive…

Free Phonecall Integration on Its Way to Gmail?
[Lifehacker - Adam Pash]

Tech news site CNET reports that Google is testing voice calling directly inside Gmail, with free calls to the U.S. and Canada and very cheap international calls. Google hasn't confirmed anything, but CNET's screenshots (like the one above) look pretty convincing. The article also says its unclear whether the new feature would act as an extension of Google Voice (the popular one-number-to-rule-them-all service) or as a completely separate entity…
