On the Prop 8 Closing Arguments
[Calitics]

I've been trying to keep abreast of the Prop 8 closing arguments, hitting refresh on several different websites. Through all of this, I have tried to at least, on occasion, take a step back to be as objective as possible. [...]

But, the case that the [anti Prop 8] legal team, headed by Olson and Boies, has built here is really quite solid.

…Judge Walker spent much of the day trying to get a legally valid point to emerge from [pro Prop 8 lawyer] Cooper's mouth. But, when it comes down to it [...] what Cooper is arguing here is that despite how wrong Prop 8 might be, it should still stand.

Double Standard: SATC 2 v. Grown-ups
[Women & Hollywood]

Here’s what bothers me. The women of Sex and the City 2 get skewered for being not mature, and self-centered and out of touch and the thousand other things that were used to put down that film, but Grown-Ups a movie that celebrates the lack of male development is what? Oh yeah, a comedy?

Look at this poster and tell me there is no double standard.

Jobs Bill Fails Cloture Test Again; Future Uncertain
[Firedoglake]

Senate Republicans successfully filibustered the scaled-back tax extenders/jobs bill Thursday, by a count of 56-40. All Republicans voting voted against the bill, including such so-called moderate Republicans as Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins and Scott Brown. The bill had been gutted of about $25 billion dollars in spending, including a $25 boost to unemployment checks, and a push back of the “doc fix” to avoid a 21% cut in Medicare reimbursement rates from a 19-month extension to a 12-month extension. Collins and Snowe are apparently demanding that the Senate take out aid to the states to pay for their Medicaid programs.

After the failed cloture vote, Harry Reid tried to move components of the bill by unanimous consent. He tried a standalone implementation of the doc fix. He tried a standalone extension of unemployment insurance. He tried a standalone increase of Medicaid funding for the states, and he tried a standalone extension of the closing date for the homebuyer’s tax credit (I disagree with Reid on that one). Each time, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell objected…
