Jupiter Loses A Stripe [Planetary Mysteries]
Jupiter has lost one of its prominent stripes, leaving its southern half looking unusually blank. Scientists are not sure what triggered the disappearance of the band.

[OMG, how will it ever find a matching tie now?? -L]

Dan Aykroyd's Alien Rant: "They're Breaking The Law" [Aliens]
Dan Aykroyd doesn't belief we'll ever have a "formal" relationship with aliens – because of 9/11. But that doesn't matter, because the 23 other species constantly observing the human race should all be arrested. Watch Aykryoyd's Larry King rant.

[Um. What?

...What?

In case of emergency, sprout wings and fly

I am sure we have all seen this one in its many guises, but I thought it was a particularly spectacular example given that nobody of historically recorded human height could have reached this pull cord. It’s about 10 feet up.

Access win? Calling all adventure service dogs

I visited a cafeteria and store at a venue along Hadrian’s Wall. Let us for the moment overlook that they had a gravel path leading to their disabled toilet facility, which then had a step on the door and look at this win for service dogs with a yen for an adrenaline rush.

It’s Easy [Trigger warning for violent imagery]

When you assume that something that’s simple for you is going to be simple for me, you’re making many assumptions about my ability level. Just because I look like you doesn’t mean I am like you. When you belittle the struggle the making a phone call or looking you in the eye is, it’s like a slap in the face. Just because you can’t see the fight doesn’t make it not real.

The views of a Disabled Lib Dem Supporter on a Coalition with the Conservatives

The Tories want to destroy the welfare state and the NHS. As a disabled person reliant on disability benefits and the care system, and pleased to live in a country that offers these things to its citizens, I am terrified that the Tories will leave me destitute and without care or medical support. Please stand up for the welfare state.

Nick Clegg himself has been outspoken on the Tory ‘marriage tax allowance’ policy, which privileges marriage over alternative families, including my own LGBT partnership, and the many single parent families and extended families of all shapes and sizes that make up the UK. Please stand up for alternative families.

Followup: Locking down your Facebook
…flouncing on Facebook isn’t necessarily an ideal option for some of us as much as we may wish to.

If you choose to stay with Facebook (and it is entirely your choice), there are various things you can do to mitigate the effect of the privacy erosion. One of these things is locking down your profile. We all have different tolerances and needs, so do what you need to do to make yourself comfortable.

I’m throwing out this excellent guide for those who are confuzzled on the whole locking down process. It shows you in a series of screenshots a good number of the steps you can take.

Note, however, that due to the very nature of these posts, the abovementioned guide may cease to be accurate at some arbitrary point in time determined only by Zuckerberg’s whim.

EXCLUSIVE: Harvard Law military recruitment not diminished by Kagan's tenure
Right-wing media figures have perpetuated the falsehood that Elena Kagan banned military recruiters from Harvard Law School during her tenure as dean. Not only did students have access to military recruiters throughout Kagan's tenure, Media Matters for America has learned that military recruitment did not drop as a result of Kagan's actions.

[...] In accordance with Harvard's pre-existing nondiscrimation policy, she barred the school's Office of Career Services (OCS) from working with military recruiters for the spring 2005 semester after the U.S Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit ruled that law schools could legally do so. During that one semester, students still had access to military recruiters via the Harvard Law School Veterans Association. During the fall 2005 semester, after the Bush administration threatened to revoke Harvard's federal funding, Kagan once again granted military recruiters access to OCS.

Fox pushes bogus claim that Kagan is avoiding "traditional interviews" with the press
Fox completely obscured the fact that it is reportedly "standard practice" for a Supreme Court nominee to deny interviews to journalists before the confirmation hearings.
If you can't see it it doesn't exist — what is this oil spill you speak of? (Hullabaloo – Digby)
I had been wondering about this. It's seemed as though the Gulf spill wasn't getting the kind of coverage it merits, but I didn't know if it was just me. Apparently not…
Are We Greece? (Paul Krugman)
David Leonhardt tries to draw parallels. But how strong is the parallel, really?

I would really question this comparison…

[bar graph]

Basically, the United States can expect economic recovery to bring the deficit down substantially; Greece, which has a larger structural deficit and also faces a grinding adjustment to overvaluation with the eurozone, can’t.

…we have a long-run fiscal imbalance of 6-plus percent of GDP, although much of that could be closed by reining in health costs. But we really don’t look much like Greece.
