(GOP) Fools and Their Money (Talking Points Memo)
Democrats have their work cut out for them this year. But things could be even worse if there weren't so many GOP direct mail groups raising tons of money but spending little if any of it on GOP campaigns.

Justin Elliott has unearthed the latest example: AmeriPac. So far in this cycle they've raised $1.3 million and spent thirteen hundred on campaign related spending.

[Wow. Wow. -L]

In Praise of S. Epatha Merkerson and Anita Van Buren
I find how they address the health insurance care issues to be the most interesting. Here’s a woman who has health insurance, probably a really good plan in comparison to most people, and she is still underinsured. One episode she talked about the lifetime cap, and in a recent episode she looks at the bills one night when she couldn’t sleep and said something along the lines to her boyfriend played by Ernie Hudson “with the deductibles and co-payments we are going broke.”

Even people with great health insurance plan can’t get sick. [...]

S. Epatha is going to be leaving Law & Order this month after 16 years. Her tenure on the show makes her the longest female character on a TV series in history.

Helen Mirren Does Prospera for Julie Taymor
Julie Taymor has taken Shakespeare’s The Tempest and given it a gender redo. USA Today has the first picture of Mirren and she looks great. The film was shot around Hawaii, and Mirren plays a woman who has “her whole life taken away from her because she was a woman.”

Taymor who has directed several films based on Shakespeare’s plays decided to give the play a gender redo because:

"there are actresses like Helen Mirren who never get to play these fantastic parts because they were not written for women…"

Iron Man 2 Does Well With Women
I am not surprised that Iron Man 2 has been luring in the ladies. And I really don’t understand why Hollywood is surprised either. [...] All in all, the numbers for Iron Man were very, very good but they didn’t break any records. The studio was surprised that the male/female ratio was 60/40. As I’ve said before, the only way for the blockbuster films to make serious money (and recoup their overwhelming costs) is for them to bring in men and women.

This is a great idea.
[Trigger warning for sexual exploitation.]

Sexual harasser and alleged rapist Joe Francis, convicted of child abuse and prostitution and accused of much more throughout his career of building the "Girls Gone Wild" exploitation video franchise, has been given his own un-rated, 12-part, half-hour reality series, "Search for the Hottest Girl in America," which has been given the greenlight to air with uncensored nudity.

Oops! Health Care Plan Protections Will Rest On Interpretation Of 'Grandfathered' (Crooks and Liars)
One would like to think that this will be interpreted in favor of the policyholders, but you never know, do you?
Big Content's depraved indifference – Boing Boing
Something I think gets lost in the debate over DRM: Big Content doesn't want DRM because they want to usher in an era of totalitarian control technologies; they don't want copyright filters because they want to make the censor's job easier; they don't want increased intermediary liability because they want to extinguish easy personal expression and collective action.

They want these things because they want to make more money.
