- May Day Marches
- People will be marching all over the country on Saturday to NO to Arizona and YES to federal immigration reform with a strong legalization program for the undocumented. (There's also a demand to stop these awful ICE deportations, a policy which is an unadulterated mess.) If you are moved to get into the streets, you can find out where the marches are gathering at this website.
America's Voice will be tweeting the DC march here. This one may be lively. They expect to be joined by Members of Congress and others who will be risking arrest.
It will be interesting to see if the media bother to cover it. I hear Jay Leno's coming to town so they may be busy.
Update: And the hits just keep on coming, Mojo Reports [...]

- Two Out of Four Ain't Bad
- Hey, tasers only killed people 50% of the time in this department. There's no reason to think there's a problem.
- Harassing science out of existence
- The evidence for why climate scientists are nothing but liars who are in it for the money? The fact that scientists get research grants to do research. Yep, that’s the basis of the entire argument. [...]
I’ve been hearing for days now a bunch of conservatives suggesting that law students should make fact-free claims about the genetic inferiority of black people without being subject to criticism, and the reason is the sanctity of free scientific inquiry. (The kind that can only be performed without scientists, evidence, or willingness to entertain the reality that the questions you’re asking have been answered and you just don’t like the answer.) I’d suggest that we start waiting expectantly for these same people to defend actual scientists who use real evidence to research issues of immediate importance, except I know that we’d be waiting until the end of time.
- The Dumb Blacks Hypothesis
- If you are going to lead a scientific inquiry about the relative intelligence of racial groups (assuming all definitional problems are solved and that “intelligence” is a single variable), then there are three potential outcomes, generally speaking…
Nobody I’ve ever had this debate with has ever mentioned [that blacks might be more intelligent than whites]. It’s because the debate that you’re having isn’t about science’s ability to measure racial intelligence as a genetic factor – it’s about the defense of racial stereotypes as something you can’t disprove and therefore shouldn’t be so damned sensitive about.
It’s simply not a good faith debate, and it can’t be approached as such.
- Quote of the Day
- [Trigger warning re: Polanski and sexual assault.]
"I have had my share of dramas and joys, as we all have, and I am not going to try to ask you to pity my lot in life. I ask only to be treated fairly like anyone else."—Roman Polanski, in a statement he released yesterday, in which he repeatedly exclaims "I can remain silent no longer!"
