- Remembering Dede Allen
- Dede Allen is probably a name you have never heard of. But even though you and I don’t know her what’s important to remember on this day after her passing is that she made huge contributions to some of the greatest films of the 20th century.
She was a world class editor and was nominated for several Academy awards, but sadly, she never won. She was also the first editor — male or female — to get an exclusive title card on a film and that was on Bonnie and Clyde in 1967.
Here are some of the films she edited [...]
According to the BBC she was the first American editor to: “begin sequences with close-ups or jump cuts and overlapping sound between shots,” things that are standards now on most films…
Editing is one area where there are women. While the numbers are still low — only 18% — it is a much higher number than directing, screenwriting and cinematography. [...]
It has been said that to be a good editor you need to be a good collaborator and multi-tasker, and not surprisingly, women are pretty good at both of those.
Anyone else have thoughts as to why there are more women in editing? Also, if you knew or worked with Dede we’d all love to hear about her.
- Scenes from a Tea Party
- There's a lot of whatthefuckery to behold here, but former Republican Representative (and presidential candidate!) Tom Tancredo suggesting that we "just send Obama back to Kenya" is really, truly breathtaking.
